THE ISHKA SACRED SITE

How We Got Our Start

It all began in 1994 when Larry Running Turtle Salazar was notified about the discovery of ancient bones found under Ennis Joslin Rd and Alameda Rd. He blessed the bones of the young girl and vowed that as long as he was on this earth, he would find a way to honor her and others found at the site 41NU2 (the location of the 2nd largest Native American burial site in Texas).

Larry set out to commemorate the burial site, bringing more awareness to the community about the site. This effort took many turns including renaming the street where the ancient bones were found to building a monument commemorating the site. Over the years there were various setbacks, but his determination never wavered and today the project has evolved into a more dynamic project that will not only honor the ancestors of the land, but will provide much more for the community.
